Starting this week, the Crosshands Roundabout near Gloucester will be closed overnight for seven nights to undergo necessary road resurfacing. Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team announced that the closure will take place between 8 pm and 7 am from Wednesday, June 3, through Thursday, June 11, excluding the weekend.
This roundabout, a key junction linking Brockworth and Little Witcombe east-west, and Coopers Hill to the A417 north-south, will see a partial road closure on each approach during the works. Despite the limited closure area, drivers should prepare for a substantial diversion route exceeding 15 miles during these hours.
The designated diversion directs traffic west along the A417 towards Barnwood, then south for over seven miles to Pitchcombe, before looping back via the A46 through Painswick returning to Coopers Hill. While there may be shorter routes available, this approved path ensures vehicles remain on similarly classified roads for safety and traffic flow.

In a letter to residents, the Highways team explained that the temporary closure is mandated under Sections 14, 15 & 16 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to protect both the public and the workforce. The closure area extends beyond the actual resurfacing zone to accommodate machinery and materials safely.
The council acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized that the timing aims to minimize disruption while ensuring road safety. The resurfacing work will be executed as efficiently as possible to reopen the route promptly.
