Nearly 1,000 homes in Gloucestershire experienced a power outage following a fault on an electricity pylon in Eastington. Around 9:20 pm on Sunday, July 12, a resident reported hearing a loud “explosion” accompanied by flickering lights in his home.
Emergency services, including the National Grid and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, promptly responded to the incident. The fault caused visible damage to the power line and nearby trees, with the explosion emitting striking colors of purple, blue, and orange. Despite the dramatic event, no fire broke out.
The eyewitness described the moment, saying, “I was in the kitchen when I heard the noise, then saw the explosion outside my window. The electric lights in my home began flickering, causing concern among me and my neighbours.”

National Grid’s engineers swiftly attended the site, made the area safe, and restored power to all 990 affected properties by 11:48 pm. A company spokesperson expressed gratitude to customers for their patience and acknowledged the support of Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service.
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they received the call at 9:27 pm and dispatched a fire engine from Stroud. They found no fire upon arrival and handed the incident over to Western Power for further resolution. The fire crew stood down at 10:02 pm.
This coordinated response ensured minimal disruption and a quick resolution to the power outage caused by the pylon fault.
