Recent weeks have seen exciting new openings that add to the culinary diversity of the area. In Gloucester, a new Indian street food venue has just launched, while Cheltenham welcomes a revamped eatery shifting from pizza to Mexican tacos.

A notable newcomer is Mazala Dosa, which opened earlier this month at Gloucester Food Dock. This restaurant offers authentic South Indian street food in a striking environment that harmonises traditional South Indian design elements with the Victorian charm of Gloucester Docks’ exposed brick and timber beams.
Owner Omer Rahim expressed his enthusiasm ahead of the launch, stating, “We’re thrilled to introduce the rich flavours and culinary traditions of South India to Gloucester Food Dock. Our goal is to provide an experience that blends genuine cuisine, welcoming hospitality, and contemporary innovation, all set within one of the county’s most unique waterfront locations.”
Marking a technological first for Gloucester, Mazala Dosa employs an autonomous service robot to greet guests, guide them to their tables, and deliver dishes from the kitchen.
Meanwhile, in Stroud, Salt Bakehouse-already a favourite for its pop-up vans around the area-has opened its first permanent shop at 28 Slad Road as of 2 September. The bakery serves coffees, pastries, and a range of sweet treats from Wednesday to Saturday, between 8am and 2pm.
Although the menu will be temporarily limited until Christmas while the business settles in, Salt Bakehouse plans to expand its offerings soon. The location is just a five-minute walk from Five Valleys Shopping Centre, where ample parking is available.
Cheltenham’s Promenade area has seen the transformation of the former Japes pizza restaurant into Taco Nopal, a Mexican taquería. Run by Japes founders Alex and Jovana, the new venture was inspired by their travels in the United States where authentic taco spots captured their attention.
The team shared, “We aimed to find new pizza inspiration in America but ended up eating tacos almost daily. Missing those flavours back home, we decided to create Taco Nopal.”
The venue focuses on simple, fresh tortillas filled with genuine Mexican flavours at affordable prices, encouraging tacos as an everyday meal. Taco Nopal is open seven days a week from midday at 23 Promenade.
Looking ahead, a new restaurant named Casa di Filomena is set to open next month at Gloucester Food Dock, neighbouring Bella Mia Pizza, which launched in 2023. Promising real home-cooked meals, the team is finalising preparations and sampling dishes ranging from creamy carbonara to tangy homemade desserts.
