Data from parking platform Parkopedia reveals the severity of parking shortages in some UK cities. Bradford tops the list with just 85 spaces available per 1,000 vehicles, followed by Sunderland with 99 spaces per 1,000 vehicles. Leeds, Sheffield, and Birmingham also face similar challenges.
If finding a space near home is a constant struggle, Roberts advises exploring less obvious parking spots nearby. “Drivers tend to stick to familiar streets or car parks, but quieter roads within walking distance often have ample space,” he says. Apps like Parkopedia and JustPark can uncover hidden parking options, including privately rented driveways—a valuable resource in high-density areas. Roberts stresses that pre-booking parking can reduce day-of stress and expenses. “Booking a space in advance not only guarantees a spot but often costs less than last-minute payments,” he explains.
He also recommends considering park-and-ride facilities on city outskirts, which can be more convenient than navigating congested city centers. Finally, if your schedule is flexible, avoid peak times; mid-mornings on weekdays are generally calmer than busy weekend afternoons.
