Hay fever season is in full swing with the Met Office predicting “moderate levels” of pollen across the UK. Dr Punam Krishan, a GP and TV personality, has shared valuable tips to help manage hay fever symptoms based on her own patients' experiences.
Dr Krishan suggests starting with over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants. If these prove ineffective, consulting a doctor for alternative medications is advisable. She highlights the importance of preventing pollen exposure by keeping windows closed during peak pollen times and using petroleum jelly to trap pollen. Additionally, she emphasizes the need for post-outdoor activity showers and laundry to remove lingering pollen particles.
Furthermore, she cautions against consuming alcohol, as it can interfere with antihistamines, leading to worsened symptoms. With hay fever affecting nearly 10 million individuals in England, it’s crucial to be proactive in managing this common allergy, especially between late March and September.
