Cheltenham Town have secured the signing of goalkeeper Wyll Stanway from Barrow for a five-figure fee, according to Gloucestershire Live.
The 25-year-old, standing at 6ft 4in, has made 65 appearances for his hometown club over the past two seasons after moving from National League North side Chester.
Stanway’s football journey began in Barrow’s youth system, where he played as a centre-back from Under-12 to Under-16 level before transitioning to goalkeeper during his late teens. His early playing career also included spells at Furness Rovers, Holker Old Boys, and Lancaster City. In March 2024, he represented England C in a match against Wales.

In addition to football, Stanway is an accomplished cricketer. He has represented Cumbria as an all-rounder and spent two seasons playing in Australia, showcasing his multi-sport talent.
Football runs in the family—Wyll is the younger brother of England midfielder Georgia Stanway, who has been instrumental in the Lionesses’ successes, including European Championship wins in 2022 and 2025 and a World Cup final appearance in 2023. Georgia recently transferred to Arsenal after impressive spells with Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
With a year remaining on his contract at Barrow, who were recently relegated to the National League, Stanway joins Cheltenham’s squad alongside player-goalkeeping coach Joe Day and emerging talent Mamadou Diallo. Day, 35, has been a consistent presence, starting in each of Cheltenham’s last 81 League Two matches since joining two years ago, while 18-year-old Diallo is expected to gain senior experience through a loan spell this season.
Stanway is anticipated to feature in Cheltenham’s pre-season friendly against Evesham United on Saturday at 3 pm.
His signing marks Cheltenham’s sixth summer acquisition, following the arrivals of Charlie McCann (also from Barrow), Jordan Shipley, Pierce Sweeney, Joe Tomlinson, and Shaun McWilliams.
