Cheltenham Town have bolstered their squad with the signing of midfielder Shaun McWilliams, just ahead of their opening pre-season friendly against Evesham United this Saturday.
The 27-year-old midfielder, known for his tenacity and tough tackling, arrives on a free transfer after parting ways with Rotherham United, where he spent the last two seasons competing in League One. Contract renewal discussions at the New York Stadium were unsuccessful, paving the way for this new chapter.
McWilliams, a product of Northampton Town’s academy, initially made his mark after a loan spell at King’s Lynn Town and broke into the Cobblers' first team in 2017. Over the years, he amassed an impressive 229 appearances across all competitions for Northampton, facing Cheltenham three times during that spell. Highlighting his career achievements, he played an integral role in Northampton’s promotions to League One in 2020 and 2023.

His arrival marks Cheltenham’s fifth signing this summer, following midfielder Charlie McCann, Jordan Shipley, defender Pierce Sweeney, and winger Joe Tomlinson.
Expressing his enthusiasm, McWilliams said, “I’m thrilled to be here and buzzing to get started. A chat with the gaffer convinced me this was the right move — his vision and style of play made it a no-brainer. I just can’t wait to step onto the pitch and get going.”
Manager Steve Cotterill welcomed the new addition, stating, “I’m really pleased to have Shaun with us. He brings a different dimension to our midfield — his grit and energy will be a challenge for any opponent. His work rate and aggression are exactly what we need, and I look forward to seeing his impact this season.”
