Cheltenham Town are poised to secure former Rangers midfielder Charlie McCann as their first new signing of the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old returns to familiar territory, having previously played under Robins manager Steve Cotterill.
McCann’s career began in the youth ranks at Coventry City before he spent four formative years at Manchester United from age 16, where he made three appearances and scored once for the Under-21 side in the EFL Trophy. In 2021, he moved to Rangers for a reported fee of £750,000, making three appearances in the Scottish Premiership.
Last season, McCann showcased his skills at Barrow, a National League side, where he played 38 matches and scored five goals. His performances also gave him the opportunity to face Cheltenham twice. Despite being under contract for another year, McCann pursued a desire to remain in the English Football League, prompting Barrow and Cheltenham to reach an agreement on his transfer.

Barrow’s newly appointed boss, Adam Murray—formerly assistant manager at Cheltenham—expressed his disappointment at losing McCann but applauded his professionalism throughout the process. “It’s important that the squad is built around players who are committed to the club’s success,” Murray said, wishing McCann the best for his future.
Internationally, McCann’s eligibility spans multiple nations. Born in Coventry, he has represented England at Under-16 level, the Republic of Ireland at Under-17 and Under-18 levels, and Northern Ireland at Under-21 level, highlighting his diverse footballing background.
Cheltenham Town’s squad is scheduled to return for pre-season training on July 1, followed by a week-long training camp in Spain starting July 4, where McCann is expected to integrate with his new teammates.
