EXCLUSIVE: Cheltenham Town Secures Midfielder Shaun McWilliams

Cheltenham Town has announced the signing of midfielder Shaun McWilliams just ahead of their opening pre-season friendly against Evesham United this Saturday. The 27-year-old, known for his relentless tackling and midfield tenacity, joins from Rotherham United after two seasons in League One.

McWilliams became available on a free transfer following unsuccessful contract negotiations at Rotherham’s New York Stadium. A product of Northampton Town’s academy, McWilliams broke into their first team in 2017 after a loan stint at King’s Lynn Town. Over six years, he accumulated 229 appearances for the Cobblers, including three matches against Cheltenham.

The midfielder played a key role in Northampton’s promotions to League One in both 2020 and 2023. His arrival marks Cheltenham’s fifth signing this summer, following Charlie McCann, Jordan Shipley, Pierce Sweeney, and Joe Tomlinson.

Cheltenham’s manager Steve Cotterill praised his new addition: “Shaun brings a different dimension to our midfield. He has bite and energy, qualities that make him tough to play against. I’m excited to have him in the squad as we prepare for the season ahead.”
