Cheltenham Town have announced the signing of midfielder Shaun McWilliams, ahead of their opening pre-season friendly against Evesham United this Saturday.
The 27-year-old, known for his tough tackling, joins the Robins after two seasons with League One side Rotherham United. McWilliams became available on a free transfer this summer after contract negotiations at the New York Stadium fell through.
A product of Northampton Town’s academy, McWilliams broke into their first team in 2017 following a loan spell at King’s Lynn Town. Over six years with the Cobblers, he made 229 appearances across all competitions, including three fixtures against Cheltenham.

The midfielder celebrated promotion to League One with Northampton in both 2020 and 2023, demonstrating his quality and experience at this level.
Shaun McWilliams is Cheltenham’s fifth acquisition this summer, joining fellow new signings Charlie McCann, Jordan Shipley, Pierce Sweeney, and Joe Tomlinson.
“I am delighted to be here, I’m buzzing,” said McWilliams. “After speaking with the gaffer, it was a no-brainer. His vision for the team and style of play really convinced me. I can’t wait to get started and contribute on the pitch.”
Manager Steve Cotterill welcomed the new addition: “I’m very happy to have Shaun on board. He brings a different dimension to our midfield, with a bit of bite and excellent work rate. Opponents won’t find it easy playing against him. I look forward to working with him this season.”
