EXCLUSIVE: Cheltenham Town Poised to Sign Former Exeter City Captain Pierce Sweeney

Cheltenham Town are set to strengthen their defense with the imminent signing of experienced defender Pierce Sweeney. The 31-year-old is expected to finalize his move to Whaddon Road on Monday, following the confirmation of his departure from Exeter City after an impressive 10-year tenure.

Sweeney, who captained Exeter City from January 2023, made a remarkable 435 appearances across all competitions, netting 24 goals and providing 21 assists since joining the club in July 2016 from Reading. Notably, one of his goals came in Exeter’s 3-1 victory over Cheltenham in September 2018.

A former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, Sweeney began his senior football career at Bray Wanderers before moving to Premier League side Reading in 2012. During his time at Exeter, he played a pivotal role in the club’s promotion to League One in the 2021/22 season.

Reflecting on his decision to leave Exeter, where he ranks fourth in all-time appearances, Sweeney shared, “It’s been a tough decision, but at this stage in my career and life, I felt it was time to seek a new challenge. I’m grateful for everything Exeter has given me and hope to leave on good terms with the club and the fans.”

Sweeney will be the Robins’ third signing this summer under manager Steve Cotterill, joining midfielders Charlie McCann and Jordan Shipley. Cheltenham Town are gearing up for pre-season training ahead of a training camp in Spain.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Sweeney said, “Having faced Cheltenham many times, I know it’s a tough venue for visitors. I’m excited to now experience it as a Robin. The manager’s vision and respect made it an easy decision. I’m eager to make a positive impact on the club, community, and dressing room.”

Manager Steve Cotterill welcomed the new addition wholeheartedly. “Pierce brings excellent defensive skills, vast experience, and strong leadership qualities. He’s the kind of character that every dressing room needs, and I’m excited to work with him.”
