EXCLUSIVE: Cheltenham Town Poised to Sign Barrow Goalkeeper Wyll Stanway

Cheltenham Town have confirmed they are set to sign goalkeeper Wyll Stanway from Barrow for a five-figure fee, according to sources at Gloucestershire Live.

The 6ft 4in, 25-year-old shot-stopper has made 65 appearances for his hometown club over the past two seasons since joining from National League North side Chester. Originally a centre-back in Barrow’s youth ranks, Stanway transitioned to goalkeeper in his late teens and has since developed into a reliable presence between the sticks.

Before making his mark at Barrow, Stanway showcased his talents with Furness Rovers, Holker Old Boys, and Lancaster City. He also earned recognition at the international level, representing England C in a match against Wales in March 2024.

Aside from football, Stanway is a skilled cricketer, playing as an all-rounder for Cumbria and gaining valuable experience during two stints in Australia.

Wyll is the younger brother of Georgia Stanway, the celebrated England midfielder who played key roles in the Lionesses' European Championship victories in 2022 and 2025, as well as their run to the 2023 World Cup final. Georgia recently transferred to Arsenal after successful spells at Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

With a year remaining on his contract at Barrow, which were recently relegated to the National League, Stanway will join forces at Whaddon Road with player-goalkeeping coach Joe Day and promising academy graduate Mamadou Diallo. Day, 35, has been ever-present in goal for Cheltenham, starting all 81 of their League Two matches over the past two seasons, while 18-year-old Diallo is expected to seek senior-level experience on loan this season.

Stanway is anticipated to feature in Cheltenham’s upcoming pre-season friendly against Evesham United this Saturday, kicking off at 3pm.

His signing marks the sixth summer addition to the Robins squad, following midfielders Charlie McCann (also from Barrow), Jordan Shipley, Pierce Sweeney, Joe Tomlinson, and Shaun McWilliams.

Cheltenham Town’s pre-season fixtures:

  • Saturday, July 18: Evesham United (A), 3pm
  • Saturday, July 25: Slimbridge (A), 2pm
  • Tuesday, July 28: Open Evening at Whaddon Road, 5pm
