Exciting Vision Unveiled to Transform Gloucestershire’s Stratford Park into a Destination for All

Stroud District Council has approved an ambitious plan to transform Stratford Park, a beloved 56-acre public space in Gloucestershire, into a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable destination by 2029. This visionary project aims to enhance every aspect of the park—from its heritage and ecology to community wellbeing and economic vitality—ensuring it becomes a place where all can thrive.

Stratford Park already boasts an impressive array of facilities, including a museum, skate park, leisure centre, bowling green, tennis courts, miniature railway, children’s nursery, fishing lake, and a historic Edwardian bandstand. Its open-air pool featuring a Grade II listed diving platform further enriches its unique charm. The park is a hub for numerous cultural and community events, such as festivals, the Stroud Show, fairs, band performances, and regular parkruns.

The new Stratford Park Development Plan focuses on strengthening the park’s connectivity, branding, and climate resilience, while protecting its natural habitats through dedicated nature recovery projects. It also promotes expanding the variety of events and activities available, balancing vibrant usage with environmental stewardship. Ensuring economic sustainability is a key priority, alongside fostering inclusivity and encouraging increased public engagement.

Council leaders emphasize safeguarding Stratford Park for future generations and empowering young people to take active roles in its evolution. The plan also highlights the park’s cultural significance within the Stroud district and seeks to enhance its appeal as a community and tourist destination.

Discussion during the June 19 community services and licensing committee meeting raised concerns about parking capacity for larger events. Councillor Paul Turner highlighted past event cancellations due to insufficient parking and inquired about plans to expand facilities. Council officers acknowledged these challenges and are exploring collaborations with nearby South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, as well as Tesco, to provide additional parking options without compromising the park’s character.

Councillor Jonathan Edmunds praised the comprehensive and inspiring proposals, while Councillor Beki Aldam described the project as a shining example of community-focused, forward-thinking governance. Together, these leaders envision Stratford Park as a renewed beacon of regeneration, environmental stewardship, and cultural vitality—benefiting the district and its residents for many years to come.
