‘Exciting’ milestone as first stretch of A417 Missing Link road set to open next month

National Highways has announced an exciting update for motorists: starting February 2, drivers will be able to use the first completed stretch of the A417 Missing Link road in Gloucestershire. This major infrastructure project, underway for almost three years, aims to replace the existing single-lane carriageway with a modern four-mile dual carriageway linking the Brockworth bypass to Cowley Roundabout.

Following government approval of a £460 million upgrade in November 2022, construction began in Spring 2023. The new road will feature three uphill lanes and two downhill lanes separated by a central reservation to improve traffic flow and safety. To further enhance driving conditions, the incline of the hill has been reduced from 10% to 8%.

Over the past year, considerable progress was made, including the installation of seven new structures and extensive resurfacing. The upcoming traffic switch will see vehicles moving onto a short, single-lane section from the A46 toward the Air Balloon roundabout. Drivers descending the hill will be directed left towards the A46 junction under the bridge, while uphill traffic will navigate two narrow lanes under traffic management systems. Beyond this, the road’s incline returns to normal as motorists approach the Air Balloon roundabout.

Preparation for this milestone involves two full weekend closures this month to complete drainage, pavement, curb, and central reservation works. Additionally, the road will close southbound overnight between the Air Balloon roundabout and the Highwayman Inn on January 15. Northbound traffic between Cirencester and Air Balloon roundabout will remain open.

Despite these temporary disruptions, access towards Cirencester via Leckhampton Hill and the A436 will remain open, including access to Crickley Hill Country Park.

Celine Acard, Senior Project Manager for the A417 Missing Link, praised the progress: “Moving traffic onto this new stretch, even if small, marks a major milestone achieved through the dedication of all involved. We look forward to further milestones in 2026 as more of the new road opens, transforming journeys and boosting reliability for local communities, businesses, and visitors alike.”

Senior Project Manager Gavin Jones of Kier Transportation added: “2025 was a fantastic year for the scheme with seven structures underway. Heading into 2026, we anticipate an exciting period with significant changes including more traffic switches onto new sections planned for spring.”

As work continues, drivers and residents can look forward to safer, smoother, and more reliable travel along the A417, thanks to this transformative project.
