Exact Date Temperatures Will Plummet to -4°C as Snow and Ice Warning Issued

A sharp drop in temperatures is expected in the coming days, accompanied by a yellow warning for snow and ice across parts of the region.

According to the Met Office, Gloucestershire and Somerset could see significant snowfall on Friday, January 2. Some areas may receive up to 5cm (two inches) of snow, with a general accumulation of 1cm to 2cm forecast across the region.

A Met Office forecaster explained, “An area of sleet and snow is expected to move southeastwards across parts of England and Wales, lasting around two to three hours in any single location. Snowfall amounts will likely range from 1cm to 2cm in some places, with as much as 5cm possible in isolated spots, particularly in the higher ground of north Wales and northwest England. Icy patches will form quickly as the sleet and snow clear.”

The snow and ice warning will be active from midnight until midday on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to a low of 1°C in Gloucester, with a chilling wind making it feel closer to -3°C in the morning. Cheltenham will experience temperatures as low as -1°C, feeling like -4°C with the wind chill. Bristol and Bath will see similar conditions, dropping to around 1°C but feeling like -3°C. The coldest period will occur between 6am and 9am on Friday, with Bath’s temperature reaching 0°C but feeling like -4°C.

The Met Office offers important safety advice for anyone facing wintry conditions: “Snowy weather can cause delays and hazardous driving conditions. Plan your route in advance and allow extra time for your journey. Check for any road closures or public transport delays, adjusting plans as necessary.

“If you must drive, ensure your vehicle is equipped with essentials such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper or de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest, and a phone charger. Stay alert to rapid changes in weather warnings and keep up to date with local forecasts.”
