Ex-MP David Drew Returns as Councillor to Unite Stonehouse

David Drew, the former Stroud MP, has been re-elected as a councillor, signaling a renewed effort to overcome recent divisions within Stonehouse. Previously a Labour politician, Drew resigned from Gloucestershire County Council, Stroud District, and Stroud Town Council ahead of last year’s elections following what he described as an “unnecessarily unpleasant” party selection process.

Now standing as an Independent, Drew secured a decisive victory in the Stonehouse Town Council North ward by-election, garnering 350 votes. He outpaced Reform UK candidate Jenny Cambridge, who received 153 votes, and Independent Wendy Thomson, who obtained 57.

Having served 28 years on Stonehouse Town Council in the past, Drew says he was encouraged to return by community members across the political spectrum. “The reason they wanted me is there has been a lot of divisiveness in the town, and we want to try and get past that,” he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Drew emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Stonehouse rather than pursuing a political career. “I’m not a practising politician, I’m a mere voluntary activist. I’m looking forward to working with some old friends and some new ones,” he said. His goal is to reach 30 years of service on the council before stepping back.

Despite no longer being affiliated with the Labour Party, local Labour members acknowledged Drew’s victory positively. Stroud Labour Party praised the win as “a massive vote of confidence in David’s experience and his deep commitment to our community,” welcoming him back as a “dedicated champion” for Stonehouse.

The by-election saw a voter turnout of 22 percent, reflecting community engagement in this important local decision.
