Ex-Gloucester Mayor Lorraine Campbell to Serve as Independent Conservative Following Suspension Over Budget Vote

Lorraine Campbell, former mayor of Gloucester and Tuffley’s City Councillor, announced she will now sit as an Independent Conservative after being suspended from the Conservative group due to a disputed budget vote.

Campbell faced suspension by the Conservative City Council group after she voted against the party line during a critical budget debate. This decision followed her support for a budget proposal that differed from her party’s position, specifically regarding bin charges and council tax increases.

Expressing her perspective, Campbell stated, “I believe I can be a more effective councillor if I have the freedom to vote irrespective of politics, beyond the constraints of group rules.” Despite her new independent status on the council, she clarified that she remains a member of the Conservative Party and intends to continue paying her membership fees.

She emphasized a commitment to Gloucester over party politics, saying, “I will work collaboratively with councillors across all parties to serve our city in the best possible way.” Campbell also voiced hope that the council would unite to tackle the financial challenges ahead, urging, “It is vital that we put political differences aside and all work together for the good of Gloucester. It’s Gloucester first and always for me, above any political agenda.”

Conservative group leader Stephanie Chambers criticized Campbell’s unilateral vote, describing it as a breach of group trust and accountability. Chambers noted that Campbell’s support for budget measures including increased bin charges and council tax, without prior discussion, undermined the group’s cohesion and responsibility to residents.

In contrast, Gloucester City Council leader Jeremy Hilton praised Campbell’s dedication and integrity, commending her willingness to act according to her principles and the interests of her constituents. Hilton highlighted her service as mayor and believes she will continue to prioritize Gloucester’s welfare as an Independent Conservative.

Following these developments, the City Council now comprises 17 Liberal Democrats, 10 Conservatives, 7 Labour members, 4 Community Independents, and 1 Independent Conservative.
