Several men have been detained on suspicion of explosives offences during a significant operation at RAF Fairford this morning. Residents in nearby villages have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, with armed police establishing a cordon around Whelford, situated close to the airbase which is regularly utilised by the United States Air Force (USAF).
A substantial emergency services presence, including a Hazardous Area Response Team, has been deployed to the scene. Gloucestershire Police announced: “We are currently evacuating a number of properties in the Whelford area following the declaration of a major incident. This action follows the arrest of several men on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.
“Specialist explosive ordnance disposal teams from the Army are examining multiple vehicles involved. Local residents have been relocated to a nearby leisure centre for their safety.

“A police cordon remains in place; however, we would like to reassure the community that we believe the incident is contained. We are collaborating closely with our partners and implementing established response plans.”
In response to the situation, Horcott Road has been closed in both directions between the Kempsford turning and RAF Fairford.
Authorities continue to manage the operation with the utmost priority on public safety and ongoing investigations.
