England Set for Another 31C Heatwave in Early August

England is bracing for a fresh wave of hot weather as forecasts predict soaring temperatures hitting around 31C from the start of August. WXCharts, using data from Met Desk, highlights that numerous southern counties—including Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Greater London, Surrey, West Midlands, Berkshire, and Sussex—are expected to experience this heatwave on Friday, August 1.

The warmth is set to persist, with highs of 30C continuing across southern England through Sunday, August 3. However, this period of summer heat will coincide with unstable weather conditions; both the Met Office and BBC Weather warn of thunderstorms, hail, and periods of rain.

The Met Office’s immediate forecast describes a mixed picture: a cloudy and damp start for the southeast and Northern Ireland, with heavy morning rain followed by heavy, thundery showers and hail possible by afternoon. Central and northern areas will face recurring rain, particularly persistent in the northwest, while southern and eastern regions will see drier spells punctuated by isolated showers. Western Scotland will experience easing rain, and sunny intervals mixed with occasional thundery showers are expected elsewhere.

Looking ahead from Wednesday to Friday, the forecast anticipates a continuation of sunny spells and scattered showers as low pressure systems maintain unsettled conditions. However, Thursday may bring more sunshine and fewer showers, with temperatures hovering near seasonal averages.

BBC Weather’s outlook for the week spanning July 28 to August 3 suggests “near seasonal temperatures,” with cooler and changeable weather prevailing due to low pressure over the eastern North Atlantic. This system will likely move towards Scandinavia, while high pressure may drift west or north-west of the UK. Temperatures are expected to fluctuate around average, with possible dips below normal in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, if the high pressure ridge shifts closer to the UK, it could usher in more stable weather and gradually rising temperatures, although forecast confidence remains low.

In sum, early August across England promises a mix of heat and volatility—bringing both summer warmth and the threat of stormy showers.
