After decades of being a cornerstone of the Gloucestershire high street, Raymond’s Stores in Lydney has closed permanently. This family-run business, which first opened its doors in the late 1930s, has long been a beloved destination for menswear, ladieswear, shoes, and household items.
Raymond’s Stores operated two locations: a carpet retail store in Coleford and the clothing and household goods shop on Newerne Street in Lydney. On Saturday, March 28, the Lydney store bid farewell to loyal customers as it shut down for good.
The store, reportedly managed by Raymond’s daughter Gloria and granddaughter Hayley, shared a heartfelt message with customers via social media: “Sadly, yesterday (March 28) was our last day of trading. To all our lovely customers old and new, thank you for your custom and friendship over the years. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Wishing you all the best. Love Jane, Gloria, and Hayley.”

While the Lydney shop has closed, the Coleford store will continue to serve customers with rugs, mats, and carpets.
The closure has marked the end of a cherished chapter in the town’s retail history. Many customers expressed their sadness and gratitude for the store’s warm service and timeless charm. One customer remarked, “So sad to see your unique store go. Thank you,” while another praised the store’s exceptional customer care and preservation of its original fittings, reflecting on the challenges faced by high street businesses today.
Founded by Raymond Raymond, who opened the first store in Coalway in the late 1930s, the business remained a family affair through the years. After Raymond’s passing in 1999, his descendants continued the legacy. The family expanded in Lydney in 1954, establishing a wholesale textile venture with a warehouse behind the shop.
Raymond’s Stores will be fondly remembered for its dedication to quality products and personal service, representing a vanishing breed of family-run independent retailers on Britain’s high streets.
