Enchanting Wildlife Experiences at WWT Slimbridge Wetlands

For years, I have been bringing my children to WWT Slimbridge Wetlands, and the magic of this place never fades. Even as my kids have grown into teenagers, we all cherish our visits—taking peaceful walks and marveling at the beautiful birds in their natural habitat.

The wetlands offer a rich variety of activities for families beyond birdwatching. Younger children can enjoy the playground and splash around in Welly Boot Land, while older ones can set off on nature trails that spark curiosity and learning about wildlife.

Our visits have become less frequent over time, but spring remains a special season here. It’s the perfect time to witness adorable goslings, cygnets, and swans wandering eagerly in search of bird seed. Watching baby birds trailing their parents is truly heartwarming. Many of the geese and swans are tame enough to gently feed by hand—a delightful experience I encourage you to try. Just be sure to purchase the bird seed sold in the gift shop, and feed only in designated areas.

The flamingo displays are a standout attraction, showcasing different species with informative posters available in the Flamingo Lagoon Zone. On one visit, we watched an engaging Wonders of Wetlands bird demonstration in the outdoor theatre, featuring a lively pink-backed pelican that kept the audience entertained.

The playful otters are always a crowd favorite. Observing them swim and interact in their holts through viewing screens is a joy. Catching an otter talk with the center’s staff adds an enriching dimension to the experience.

With convenient toilet facilities and handwashing stations scattered throughout the park, your visit remains comfortable and hygienic. Although snacks, ice cream, and drinks are available for purchase, we usually bring a picnic to enjoy on the grounds.

Photography enthusiasts will find plenty to capture thanks to numerous hides and breathtaking birdlife. The wetlands are fully disabled-accessible, making it an inclusive adventure for all visitors.

To support this incredible conservation center, consider purchasing a family membership—it offers excellent value and helps protect this precious habitat.

We love every trip to WWT Slimbridge Wetlands and highly recommend it as a destination filled with enchantment, education, and nature’s wonders. You’re sure to leave with your heart singing.
