Perched atop limestone cliffs over the winding River Wye, Symonds Yat Rock offers breathtaking vistas framed by ancient woodland. The site is a hotspot for birdwatchers, with predators like goshawks, buzzards and sparrowhawks often seen soaring above. Additionally, the rock’s historical significance as an Iron Age hill fort dating back some 2,500 years adds to its allure.
Gerry elaborated on the area’s wildlife and surroundings. “Peregrine falcons nest on the cliff faces, and below you can see Copper Hill and the woodland famously used as a filming location for Harry Potter. At Symonds Yat East, there’s a picturesque hamlet where the red house featured in the Netflix series Sex Education stands. The Wye Valley and surrounding forest have served as backdrops for many movies and TV shows,” he explained.
Another notable attraction within the Forest of Dean is Puzzlewood, a 14-acre area of moss-covered, twisted trees, wooden bridges and rich undergrowth. Puzzlewood has twice been named among the UK’s most beautiful places by Big 7 Travel, captivating visitors with its almost magical atmosphere.
