Gerry adds further insight: “Symonds Yat Rock is an old Iron Age hill fort positioned near the Hertfordshire border, overlooking the countryside. Imagining people living there 2,500 years ago is remarkable. Peregrine falcons nest in the cliff faces, often visible as they glide past. Below, the River Wye flows past Copper Hill and woodlands famous for scenes from the Harry Potter films.”
He also highlights Symonds Yat East, a charming hamlet by the river. “It’s beautifully picturesque, and along the walk you pass the house featured in the Netflix series Sex Education. The Wye Valley has been a filming location for many productions, reflecting the area’s enchanting appeal.”
Another notable forest attraction is Puzzlewood-a 14-acre site of winding trails, moss-covered trees, wooden bridges and snowdrops scattered across rugged terrain. Frequently cited alongside Symonds Yat as one of the region’s most captivating spots, Puzzlewood has earned a place on Big 7 Travel’s “50 Most Beautiful Places in the UK” list for two consecutive years. A lesser-known but equally intriguing location is the Darkhill Ironworks. “This old industrial ruin offers a uniquely atmospheric experience where nature has reclaimed the surroundings. It’s ideal for a peaceful nature walk to explore the remains.”
