Former US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and partner Portia De Rossi are poised to stay long-term at their flood-prone Cotswolds property after securing planning permission for new horse stables. The couple faced concerns over potential damage to nearby Roman archaeological remains but have navigated the planning process successfully.
The pair purchased Kitesbridge Farm near Burford for £15 million in early 2024 and envisaged it as their permanent residence. Prior to moving out briefly, they invested an additional £7.5 million on internal and external renovations. Despite the property being listed for sale last July and a significant price reduction, it failed to attract a buyer, owing in part to persistent flooding from the River Windrush that runs through the 43-acre estate.
West Oxfordshire District Council granted planning permission for the new stables with conditions ensuring they are strictly for private use by the owners and not for commercial purposes like livery or riding schools. The site’s proximity to Roman historical features—a bridge, road, villa, and bathhouse—necessitated the involvement of an archaeologist during all groundworks, with continuous monitoring mandated.

In supporting the application, the couple’s representatives underscored their passion for horses and their intent to make the estate their long-term home, stating that the existing property lacked adequate facilities for horse care and training. Planning officials praised the traditional stable design, which complements the existing building cluster without harming the Cotswold National Landscape.
The approved plan includes a stone stable building with a pitched tile roof that houses two loose boxes, tack storage, and feed areas. Its traditional vernacular style aligns with neighboring structures to maintain the site’s visual harmony. Additionally, a detailed surface water drainage scheme is required to mitigate flooding risk.
Ellen DeGeneres previously emphasized the necessity of equestrian facilities, noting Portia’s deep connection to horses. The couple’s continued investment in the property signals their commitment to making it their permanent home. Meanwhile, a separate application for an all-weather riding arena on the property remains under council consideration.
