Eating this Food Before Bed May Trigger Nightmares, New Study Reveals

A recent study has unveiled that consuming certain foods before bedtime, particularly dairy, might be linked to nightmares and poor sleep quality. Researchers from MacEwan University surveyed over 1,000 students to investigate the relationship between dietary habits, food intolerances, and sleep disturbances.

The study focused on lactose intolerance, a common issue that causes gastrointestinal discomfort, which may disrupt sleep and provoke vivid or unsettling dreams. Dr. Tore Nielsen, the lead author published in Frontiers in Psychology, explained that the severity of nightmares correlates strongly with lactose intolerance and other food allergies.

“Our findings suggest that modifying eating habits for individuals with specific food sensitivities could reduce the frequency and intensity of nightmares,” said Nielsen. This connection sheds light on why dairy products are often blamed for poor sleep experiences.

Participants reported a variety of sleep issues, with about one-third frequently experiencing nightmares. Women were more likely than men to remember their dreams and report food intolerances, and a considerable number believed that late or specific food consumption impacted their sleep quality. Notably, foods high in sugar, spice, and dairy were commonly blamed for disturbing dreams.

The researchers observed that nightmares coincided with gastrointestinal symptoms caused by lactose intolerance, indicating that digestive discomfort plays a role in the quality of rest and dream content. This suggests that the physical sensations during sleep can influence dream intensity and mood upon waking.

Although this study reveals compelling associations, the complex relationship between diet and sleep requires further investigation. It remains unclear whether poor diet leads to worse sleep, unhealthy sleep drives dietary choices, or another factor influences both.

Dr. Nielsen emphasized the need for broader studies involving diverse populations and controlled experiments. “We hope to conduct trials comparing cheese consumption against control foods before sleep to better understand these effects,” he stated.

In conclusion, individuals who experience frequent nightmares or sleep issues might consider evaluating their dairy intake and potential lactose intolerance as part of improving their sleep health.
