Easy Changes Could Slash Laundry Bills by £134 Annually

With the cost of living on the rise, households are looking for easy ways to cut expenses. Laundry bills, often overlooked, can be dramatically reduced by making just a few simple changes. According to experts at Which?, families can save up to £134 annually by adjusting washing temperatures, switching detergents, maintaining tumble dryers, and optimizing washing loads—without compromising on cleanliness.

Which? researchers found that households doing around four washes per week stand to benefit the most from these changes. The biggest savings come from washing clothes at lower temperatures. Reducing the wash from 40°C to 20°C cuts energy use by 62%, saving approximately £40 a year. Modern washing machines, particularly when used with liquid detergents, clean effectively at these cooler settings, according to Which?. Senior researcher Rebecca Jakeman emphasizes that higher temperatures are rarely necessary unless clothing is especially dirty.

Detergent choice also impacts costs. Testing revealed that some branded detergents cost up to 36p per wash, while high-performing budget alternatives can be as low as 9p per wash. For a family washing four times weekly, switching detergent brands could save about £56 annually.

Tumble dryer maintenance is another important factor. Blocked filters significantly increase energy consumption; tests showed heat-pump dryers with clogged filters used 50% more electricity after multiple loads due to fluff and lint buildup. Regularly cleaning filters could reduce running costs by roughly £27 a year.

Furthermore, washing fewer full loads instead of small daily washes enhances efficiency. Which? estimates that changing from daily small washes to a few full loads weekly can save around £11 annually, even when quick cycles are used.

With laundry appliances among the most frequently used domestic devices, reducing their energy consumption even slightly can add up to substantial savings. Which? also recommends investing in energy-efficient washing machines and heat-pump tumble dryers to maximize long-term savings.

Altogether, combining these simple strategies—lower wash temperatures, smarter detergent choices, diligent dryer maintenance, and fewer, fuller loads—can trim laundry bills by approximately £134 each year. For families tightening their budgets, these straightforward changes offer a practical and effective way to save money with minimal effort.
