Residents of Coleford, a market town in Gloucestershire, have a unique opportunity to earn £315 by helping their local council answer a vital question about the town’s future. The Forest of Dean District Council, in partnership with Coleford Town Council, has launched a climate citizen visioning project, inviting 22 local people to contribute recommendations on how to create a happy, fair, and climate-conscious future for Coleford.
The project asks: “How can we create a happy and fair future for Coleford while working together to respond to the challenges of climate change?” This citizen visioning initiative is part of the Innovate UK Net Zero Living programme, designed to support communities and authorities in adopting sustainable, net zero solutions.
Citizen visioning is a well-established democratic process, bringing together a diverse group of participants to engage in thoughtful discussion and ensure many voices are heard in shaping critical local decisions. Participants will be selected randomly through a lottery from residents aged 18 and over and will need to commit to attending five sessions.

As a thank-you for their time and input, selected participants will receive £315, lunch at full-day sessions, travel reimbursements, and additional support to ensure accessibility.
Cllr Jackie Dale, Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities at Forest of Dean District Council, encourages everyone in Coleford to take part: “You don’t need any special skills or experience — just an open mind and a willingness to listen and contribute. This is your chance to help shape a more sustainable, prosperous, and fair future for our community.”
The visioning sessions are scheduled as follows:
- Wednesday, June 18, 6:30 – 8:45pm
- Wednesday, June 25, 6:30 – 8:45pm
- Saturday, June 28, 9:30am – 4:30pm
- Wednesday, July 2, 6:30 – 8:45pm
- Saturday, July 5, 9:30am – 4:30pm
Results from these discussions will directly influence local government strategies on climate action, wellbeing, inclusive travel, and social equity — ensuring the community’s voice drives the future of Coleford.
