Durham sealed a commanding ten-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at the Riverside yesterday, further strengthening their bid for promotion to Division One of the Rothesay County Championship. The reigning leaders moved even further ahead with just four games left in the season, while Gloucestershire remain anchored at the bottom of the table after enduring their ninth loss in ten matches.
Durham required just four runs to win on the morning following a suspension of play due to poor light on Saturday. Openers Matty Potts and Ollie Robinson took to the crease, with Potts dispatching the winning boundary off gentle off-spin bowling from Ollie Price on the final delivery of the first over, concluding the game in a mere six balls.
The hosts' victory was built upon a solid all-round team performance. South African overseas player David Bedingham shone with a superb 122-run innings, his fifth century of the campaign, bringing him within 57 runs of the 1,000-run milestone for the season. Gloucestershire struggled early on the opening day, bowled out for 137, with Kasey Aldridge taking an impressive five-wicket haul and James Bracey’s resilient 60 the primary resistance.

Durham’s dominance continued as they established a first innings lead of 247 runs. Aldridge picked up four more wickets in the second innings, finishing with remarkable match figures of 9-63. Additionally, Brydon Carse contributed four crucial wickets, showcasing the depth and quality of Durham’s squad, which also features notable players such as Ben Stokes.
Gloucestershire’s second innings saw a fightback with Miles Hammond scoring 58, helping the visitors post 250 and slightly edging ahead on the third evening. However, play was suspended due to bad light before Durham could complete their chase until the next morning.
Reflecting on the circumstances surrounding the delayed finish, Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne expressed his concerns regarding the umpires' decisions to allow play in poor light on Saturday evening. He criticised the timing of Carse’s bowling despite fading light and highlighted that his team were not inclined to finish the match under such conditions. Alleyne acknowledged Durham’s superiority but lamented certain decisions he felt were unfair, stating, “One of the poorest is playing in the light that we did for so long.”
He further explained their strategy of delaying the game, noting, “We thought we’d hedge our bets and see if it might rain all day tomorrow, so you never know.”
Ultimately, the weather remained clear and Durham quickly secured victory on Sunday morning.
Looking ahead, Durham will travel to face Northampton in their next County Championship match. Meanwhile, Gloucestershire return home to Bristol to host Derbyshire, a team they defeated by ten wickets earlier in the season. Both matches commence on Wednesday.
