A Gloucestershire village is confronting a mounting parking crisis, with residents and officials warning that urgent action is needed before a serious accident occurs. Drybrook, located in the Forest of Dean, is experiencing escalating parking problems that are causing congestion and raising safety concerns, particularly around the local primary school.
The village’s public car park on Drybrook Road, managed by Forest of Dean District Council, has long been criticised for poor lighting, unmarked bays, and lack of traffic management—issues that have persisted despite repeated requests from Drybrook Parish Council. Chairman Dave Middlemiss expressed growing frustration at the lack of meaningful improvements to the site, which is essential for residents, visitors, and local businesses.
The situation is becoming increasingly precarious due to potential changes at the Memorial Hall car park, which currently allows parents free parking for school drop-offs and pick-ups. With plans to restrict this access for the upcoming academic year, concerns are mounting over the impact on parking availability and road safety.

Middlemiss highlighted the community’s anxiety: “The lack of suitable parking and traffic management is causing congestion and dangerous parking practices, especially around Drybrook Junior School during peak times. Parents, children, and pedestrians must navigate hazardous conditions daily, and many fear it’s only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.”
Dave Acton from Drybrook Memorial Hall acknowledged the worsening parking dilemma, explaining the hall’s dilemma between accommodating village events and school parents competing for limited spaces. “If parents use the car park during busy times, there’s no room for paying hall customers. It’s an awkward problem without a clear solution,” he said.
School headteacher Thomas Henesey emphasized their commitment to safety and welcomed collaborative efforts to find long-term solutions. The school is actively working with local councils and community groups to improve parking and traffic flow, especially during critical drop-off and pick-up periods.
Forest of Dean District Council recently met with parish council representatives and is exploring potential improvements such as better lighting and grounds maintenance. However, they stressed that the Memorial Hall car park is not under their control, and that highways and traffic management fall within Gloucestershire County Council’s remit. The council has communicated local concerns to the county authorities.
While the district council-owned public car park will remain free and open, discussions are ongoing about Drybrook Parish Council potentially taking over its management amid local government reorganisation. Officials pledged to continue engaging with the community as plans develop.
For residents, the issue goes beyond parking availability—it’s about safeguarding the village’s infrastructure and ensuring a safe environment for all.
