Tom Roberts from Autotrader emphasizes the impact of planning ahead: “Booking parking spaces in advance almost always leads to cheaper rates compared to paying on the spot. Even a few hours' notice can unlock better deals.” He recommends using comparison sites and apps to explore all available parking options rather than simply settling for the first car park you see.
Checking for free or discounted parking around your destination is also a smart move, especially in retail parks and leisure venues, where parking validation may be offered. For those who make frequent visits to the same location, Roberts suggests that monthly or weekly permits from local operators often deliver substantial savings compared to daily payments.

Using data from parking platform Parkopedia, Autotrader identified UK cities with the tightest parking constraints. Bradford tops the list, with approximately 85 parking spaces available per 1,000 vehicles, followed closely by Sunderland with just 99 spaces per 1,000 vehicles. Leeds, Sheffield, and Birmingham also face significant parking shortages.
If you regularly struggle to find parking near your home, Roberts advises broadening your search beyond the usual spots. “Many drivers stick to familiar streets or car parks, but quieter roads nearby often have less competition,” he explains. He also recommends checking whether your local council offers residents’ permits, which can provide protected parking spaces you might otherwise miss.
Additionally, parking apps like Parkopedia and JustPark can reveal lesser-known options, including privately rented driveways — a helpful option in busy neighborhoods.
Roberts stresses that advance planning not only lowers costs but also reduces last-minute stress. “Booking a space ahead of time guarantees a spot and often saves money compared to paying on arrival,” he says. He also suggests considering park-and-ride locations on city outskirts to avoid the frustration of searching for central parking.
