A common misconception among UK motorway drivers could result in severe legal penalties, including an unlimited fine and points on a driving licence. Many drivers believe that the left-hand lane is designated for lorries and that the middle lane should be used for the majority of the journey, but this is incorrect.
Steve Walker, head of digital content at Auto Express, highlighted this frequently observed error: “One of the biggest misconceptions among British drivers is that lane one on a motorway is essentially ‘the lorry lane’, and that lane two is where most drivers should stay for the majority of their journey. This is simply not the case, but it is a belief that has become so widespread that it has almost become motorway folklore.”
The Highway Code provides clear guidance on motorway lane usage. Rule 264 states: “Keep in the left lane unless overtaking.” Drivers are advised to return to the left lane as soon as it is safe after overtaking. An exception is made when it is necessary to move into an adjacent lane to create space for emergency services or stationary vehicles on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area.

Persistent middle-lane driving is not just poor etiquette; it can be classified as careless or inconsiderate driving. Mr Walker cautioned that: “If you are cruising along in the middle lane when the left lane is clear, you could actually be breaking the law without realising it. This offence can result in an unlimited fine, a discretionary driving disqualification, and three to nine penalty points on your licence.”
This habit often arises from observing other drivers, as Mr Walker explains: “It is a particularly good example of how driving habits can be passed down from one generation to the next. If drivers have grown up seeing parents, friends and other motorists routinely sitting in the middle lane, they can easily assume that is the correct way to drive.”
He emphasised the correct approach to motorway lane use: “In reality, the left lane is the normal driving lane. The other lanes are there primarily for overtaking.”
