Drivers Get First Opportunity to Experience New Two-Mile Stretch of A417 ‘Missing Link’ Road

Motorists will soon have their first chance to drive along a newly constructed two-mile section of the A417 ‘missing link’ dual carriageway. This marks a major step forward in the project to upgrade and replace a critical stretch of the route.

The transition to this new section will take place following a scheduled weekend closure of the A436 and A46 Brockworth junction to the Air Balloon roundabout. This closure begins at 8pm on Friday, June 26, and ends at 6am on Monday, June 29.

Upon completion of the weekend work, the two-mile stretch will be open to traffic as part of the permanent upgraded A417 route. Simultaneously, the existing A417 segment between the former Air Balloon site and the B4070 Birdlip turning will be permanently closed to vehicles and later converted for use by pedestrians and cyclists.

Celine Acard, National Highways senior project manager for the A417 Missing Link scheme, expressed pride in the progress made, stating, “The advances on the A417 Missing Link are remarkable, reflecting the hard work and cooperation of all involved. This upgrade promises to enhance travel reliability, safety, and bring lasting benefits to local residents, businesses, and visitors.”

Drivers should note that the new section features narrower lanes and a 40mph speed limit as it passes under the newly constructed green bridge and navigates the Shab Valley interchange. The temporary traffic arrangement will remain in place for at least five weeks. Additional road closures on the A417 and A436 are planned for July, with details to be announced in due course.

Travelers are advised to prepare for possible delays and to consider alternative routes during peak times. Updated information, including diversion directions and walking paths, will be available on the official A417 Missing Link webpage.
