Dragons' Den’s Sara Davies Shares Urgent Health Warning After Pregnancy Diabetes Scare

Sara Davies, celebrated Dragons' Den investor and founder of Crafter’s Companion, has courageously shared an important health warning following complications after her pregnancies. Building a successful crafting empire from her university days, Sara quickly grew her business to a £500,000 turnover and later became the youngest female investor on Dragons' Den in 2019.

Despite her popularity on the BBC Two show, Sara announced in March that she would be stepping back to concentrate fully on her business ventures. Alongside her career update, she opened up about her personal health journey during a candid conversation with Gabby Logan on the Mid Point podcast.

Sara revealed that she experienced gestational diabetes in both pregnancies, a condition that placed her at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. “As I was leaving the hospital, my doctor warned me, ‘You must lose the baby weight, otherwise you will develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years,’” Sara recounted.

Her routine health checks showed a worrying trend. Each year, Sara undergoes an HbA1c test to monitor her blood sugar levels, which have been gradually increasing. “A couple of years ago, my GP warned me, ‘Another year, Sara, and you’ll be pre-diabetic,'” she disclosed. Inspired by health expert Michael Mosley’s books on blood sugar management, Sara has adopted a proactive approach to her diet.

Her strategy focuses on reducing sugar intake and being mindful about the types of fruit she consumes. She now favors berries over higher-fructose fruits like apples and oranges, as high fructose consumption is linked to increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes develops when the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or resists its effects, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. The NHS lists key symptoms to watch for, including excessive fatigue, frequent urination, persistent thirst, and unexplained weight loss. Other signs may include blurred vision, slow healing wounds, itching in genital areas, or repeated yeast infections.

Sara’s openness highlights the importance of monitoring health after pregnancy complications and taking decisive steps towards a healthier lifestyle to prevent serious conditions like Type 2 diabetes.
