Dr Michael Mosley’s Widow Shares Heartbreaking Final Moments with Late TV Doctor

Dr Michael Mosley’s widow, Dr Clare Bailey Mosley, has opened up in a deeply moving interview about her final moments with the beloved TV doctor and the profound grief she has faced since his sudden death.

Michael Mosley, aged 67, tragically disappeared while on a holiday on the Greek island of Symi in June last year. After going for a walk near their villa, he failed to return, prompting a large-scale search. His body was discovered five days later.

Clare recounted the day they arrived on Symi by ferry on June 4, staying with friends at their villa. Shortly after arriving, Michael grew bored and decided to explore the island alone. Not interested in reading or the beach, he left at 1:30 pm with a bottle of water Clare had given him.

“It was just an ordinary exchange of words as he went off for his walk,” Clare recalled. “Very banal. I don’t think there was even a kiss.” While Michael explored, Clare and a friend spent the afternoon on the beach.

Concern mounted when Michael did not return by evening. After notifying the local police, they were initially told to wait 48 hours before any search could begin. Clare pushed firmly for action, and eventually a local search-and-rescue team was deployed.

On June 9, Michael’s body was found, ending the tragic search.

A coroner’s inquest held in December last year delivered an open conclusion on the cause of death. Senior coroner Crispin Butler stated the death was ‘indeterminate’ but might have been caused by heatstroke or an unknown medical event. No evidence of homicide, suicide, or injury-related accident was found.

To honour his legacy, Michael’s family has established a clinical research fellowship in his name, in partnership with King’s College London and the Chronic Disease Research Foundation. The fund aims to advance research into improving metabolic health—a cause Michael passionately championed.

“Michael took great pride in his work helping people improve metabolic health,” Clare explained. “Better metabolic health lowers risks for many chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cancer. We’re proud this fellowship will carry on his vital work.”

Professor Tim Spector, Medical Director of the Chronic Disease Research Foundation and a close friend, added: “Michael’s spirit will live on through this fellowship, translating cutting-edge research into better health outcomes for patients.”

The Michael Mosley Fund stands as a fitting tribute to a man dedicated to helping millions live healthier lives.
