Dr Michael Mosley’s Family Reveal Simple Daily Exercise That Boosts Longevity

Dr Michael Mosley’s widow, Dr Clare Bailey Mosley, and their son, Dr Jack Mosley, have highlighted a surprisingly simple daily exercise that may significantly enhance longevity and overall health. Both Dr Clare, a retired GP, and Dr Jack, who has followed in his father’s footsteps by authoring health-related books, emphasize the importance of balance as we age.

Famous for popularising the 5:2 and Fast 800 diets and presenting shows such as Wonders of the Human Body and Secrets of the Superagers, Dr Michael Mosley tragically passed away in June 2024 during a trip to the Greek island of Symi.

In 2023, Dr Mosley referenced a study that found the ability to stand on one leg for at least 10 seconds in midlife was the strongest predictor of survival over the following 20 years. This simple balance test is linked to “less frailty, fewer falls, and better brain health,” says Dr Jack on Instagram.

Jack explained, “Standing on one leg engages various systems—from coordination and strength to inner ear function and vision. It’s a powerful snapshot of how well your body is ageing.” To improve balance, he suggested enjoyable activities like dancing, tai chi, and yoga.

He fondly recalled his father’s habit of balancing on one leg while brushing his teeth—a convenient way to incorporate balance training into a busy day. Dr Mosley himself endorsed this routine during a podcast conversation, noting that maintaining good balance is crucial since accidental falls are the second leading preventable cause of death globally, especially among older adults.

Dr Mosley recommended standing on one leg for 30 seconds while brushing, then switching legs. He emphasized the benefits extend beyond balance alone, referencing the BMJ-published study in which middle-aged participants’ ability to balance predicted their life expectancy two decades later.

This simple yet powerful exercise offers an accessible way to enhance longevity, reduce frailty, and support cognitive health—making balance a vital focus for healthy ageing.
