Dr Amir Khan has praised those who carry and use a £10, 2-litre water bottle daily, calling them potentially among the healthiest people in the UK. According to the NHS GP and regular ITV contributor, this simple habit supports a vital, yet often neglected, healthy routine — staying properly hydrated throughout the day.
On his podcast, No Appointment Necessary, Dr Khan emphasized that while many focus on topical skin care like moisturisers, drinking enough water is even more important for skin health and overall wellbeing. He applauded anyone who makes hydration a priority, especially those who drink water first thing in the morning.
“I love co-presenter Cherry Healy’s routine of having water as soon as she wakes up,” Dr Khan said. “Hydrating right after you get up is one of the healthiest habits you can develop. It helps you rehydrate, kickstarts your metabolism and energy levels, supports brain function, aids digestion, and promotes toxin elimination.”

He encouraged listeners to adopt the practice of keeping a glass of water by their bedside to drink immediately upon waking, recommending around 300ml each morning. Throughout the day, individuals should aim to consume two to three litres of water to maintain optimal hydration.
Dr Khan acknowledges that some people find drinking plain water boring or forget to drink enough due to busy lifestyles. Using a large, practical water bottle can help solve this problem by reducing the number of refills needed and making hydration more convenient. Many retailers offer 1 to 2-litre bottles at low prices, with 2-litre options typically costing under £10.
The NHS supports these habits, noting that hydration also comes from foods and other drinks such as milk, tea, and coffee. They suggest alternatives like sparkling water or adding lemon or lime slices for flavor. However, they warn against sugary drinks, especially for children, due to risks of weight gain and dental damage.
Failing to stay hydrated can lead to dehydration, causing symptoms like dry mouth, strong-smelling urine, constipation, kidney issues, and joint pain. Proper hydration, facilitated by habits like carrying and drinking from a sizeable water bottle daily, supports long-term health and wellbeing.
Dr Khan concluded his message with a cheer for those who carry their water bottles everywhere: “When people roll their eyes at you for lugging a big water bottle around, be smug, be smart. You’re doing your body a huge favour.”
