Excitement is building around the Five Acres leisure centre redevelopment after Forest of Dean District Council approved plans for a new artificial grass football and rugby pitch, complete with floodlighting, fencing, and spectator facilities.
The council granted itself permission this week, marking a significant step forward for a project that has faced numerous delays since being awarded £9.2 million in regeneration funding in 2021 by the former Government.
The approval has sparked hopes of a “domino effect” that will accelerate further development at the site, unlocking the council’s vision to transform Five Acres into a vibrant community hub.
Council officials revealed an ambitious blueprint in August, outlining plans for expanded leisure amenities, including soft play areas, party rooms, power-assisted exercise zones, group exercise spaces, a 53-station gym, and an on-site café.
Berry Hill ward councillor Jamie Elsmore (Progressive Independents) expressed relief and optimism following the pitch approval. “It’s been a long time coming, and understandably frustrating for everyone waiting. But thanks to persistent effort – including many productive meetings with my colleague Tim Gwilliam – we are moving forward,” Elsmore said.
He added, “The unanimous support from the development management committee for the 3G pitch is reassuring. We’re hopeful construction will start next year, sparking a domino effect that pushes the entire project ahead.”
Elsmore also paid tribute to the community’s patience. “The site has been an eyesore for too long. It would be great to finally see tangible progress and bring this space back to life.”
Environment, Wildlife, Heritage, and Culture Cabinet Member Sid Phelps (Green, Lydbrook) shared a similar sentiment, praising the current administration’s dedication. “We’re determined to make this happen,” he said. “The pitch approval strengthens the case for Five Acres, and the senior management team and cabinet are working tirelessly to bring the project to fruition – we’re closer than ever.”
With momentum firmly building, Five Acres leisure centre looks poised to become a dynamic destination for sports, fitness, and community activities in the Forest of Dean.
