Dom Joly’s Favourite Pub: Cheltenham’s Best-Kept Secret

If you’re searching for a charming spot to enjoy a drink in the sunshine this weekend, look no further than Sandford Park Alehouse. Nestled on Cheltenham’s high street since 2013, this unassuming pub has earned a stellar reputation with a remarkable selection of 16 cask ales and 10 keg lines.

Sandford Park Alehouse has been recognised as both Cheltenham Pub of the Year and National Pub of the Year by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). Renowned comedian Dom Joly also lists it among his favourite local watering holes, adding to its allure.

The pub’s setting is as inviting as its drinks. Tucked opposite Sandford Park, the Alehouse blends effortlessly with Cheltenham’s elegant Regency architecture. From afar, it might seem just another row of houses, but as you approach, the welcoming blackboards and delicate ironwork draped with climbing vines reveal its character. Outside, menus tempt with culinary delights like ‘Cheltenham’s Best Fried Chicken’ on Mondays and Tuesdays, alongside hearty burgers, loaded fries, chicken wings, and tenders — all priced competitively.

Step inside, and you find a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere that strikes a perfect balance between modern and traditional. The pub occupies a Grade-II listed building, lending it a sense of history even though it’s a relatively young establishment. The spacious bar glows under strings of fairy lights, while the adjacent billiards room offers a selection of board games, perfect for lingering afternoons with friends and family.

Outside, the beautifully maintained beer garden beckons, with two levels of seating. The upper terrace is a sunny haven for spring afternoons, while the lower level is home to a covered outdoor bar and a large projector screen. This screen has recently attracted sports fans enjoying Six Nations rugby and the Cheltenham races, adding to the buzz.

Last month, Sandford Park Alehouse hosted its inaugural Dark Side of the Ale festival, showcasing 50 dark beers from around the world alongside specialty cocktails and daily live entertainment including DJs, comedy, and music.

General Manager Martyn, who joined last year, sums up the pub’s ethos: “We’re doing everything we can to bring people together and be a vital part of the community. This year, we’re focusing on events and creating great experiences to keep people coming back. The hospitality sector’s had a tough few years, so we want every visit to count.”

Despite narrowly missing out on CAMRA’s Pub of the Year this year, Sandford Park Alehouse is already gearing up for next year’s competition, determined to reclaim the top spot.

Earlier this year, the pub also won Best Pub at the Gloucestershire Foodie Awards—an accolade that piqued my interest in trying the food. I sampled the Padron peppers, a generous plate of salty, fried green peppers priced at just £5. Paired with a half-pint of Broadoak’s sweet, fruity Purple Haze cider, it was the perfect light snack to accompany my visit.

Martyn highlights the pub’s standout beer range, particularly the selection of Belgian and German brews, alongside an excellent variety of non-alcoholic options. “We celebrate smaller breweries and aim to offer something for everyone, whether you prefer classic ales or new-school craft,” he explains.

Regulars come from all walks of life, enjoying the friendly community atmosphere. Martyn notes, “The only downside might be how discreet the pub is—unless you know it’s here, it’s easy to miss. But being one of Cheltenham’s best-kept secrets has its charm, and business is thriving despite the tough climate.”

As for Dom Joly’s visits, Martyn recalls a lucky encounter: “I saw the video of him naming Sandford as a favourite just before I started. The day before my first shift, I was sat in the garden, and he was at the table right behind me—a positive sign! Haven’t seen him since, but it was a fun coincidence.”

Sandford Park Alehouse is located at 20 High Street, Cheltenham, open six days a week from 11am and from 12pm on Sundays. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s well worth discovering this gem.
