Dolly Parton tribute act preparing to perform in Gloucestershire pays emotional tribute to late star

Kelly O’Brien, widely regarded as the UK’s premier Dolly Parton tribute act, has spoken candidly about the emotional challenge ahead as she prepares to perform in Gloucestershire following the recent death of the iconic country music legend. Reflecting on Dolly Parton’s passing, Kelly described it as the loss of a “great light” in the world and shared a deep sense of responsibility to continue celebrating her extraordinary legacy.

The 52-year-old, who has the endorsement of the Parton family, has an impressive background that includes working as Dolly’s body double and being the only UK finalist in the global casting call for the forthcoming Dolly Parton Broadway musical. Kelly’s passion for country music began in her teenage years, and her talent for impersonating Dolly was discovered somewhat serendipitously when she dressed as the star for a friend’s 40th birthday party.

In a heartfelt video posted to her Facebook page, Kelly became emotional as she processed the news of Dolly’s passing. “I’m beyond sad,” she said tearfully, adding, “I honestly thought Dolly would live to be 100.” She revealed that Dolly’s illness had been unknown to many and that conversations with friends and family of Dolly had underscored the shock of her brief battle with cancer.

Based in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, Kelly underwent six months of intensive training to master Dolly’s distinctive dresses, makeup techniques, musical skills, and speech. Despite the difficulty she anticipates in performing without Dolly herself, Kelly affirmed her commitment: “I’m going to go forward with my show.” She described the loss as if losing a “best friend,” showing the profound personal connection she feels.

Kelly’s admiration for Dolly runs deep. Having met the star in 2011, her home is a testament to her devotion, featuring over 150 Dolly costumes, along with books, photos, signs, crystals for embellishing costumes, and wigs. She was on holiday with her family in Turin when she received news of Dolly’s death, finding it “devastating.”

Describing Dolly as “a genius,” Kelly acknowledged that it will take time to come to terms with the reality of her absence. The Rose Theatre highlights Kelly’s performances as a comprehensive theatrical concert experience that traces Dolly’s musical journey from the 1960s to today, complete with a live band. Kelly is praised for capturing the heart, humour, and sparkling magic characteristic of the Queen of Country herself, earning admiration from fans and critics alike for her vocal talent, striking resemblance, and sincere tribute.

Fans echo this sentiment in Kelly’s online community. One wrote, “I’ve seen you live. I took my granddaughter, who is now a big fan too. You are amazing. A great credit to the beautiful soul that is Dolly. You will keep her memory alive. Keep doing what you do best.”
