Kelly O’Brien, recognised as the UK’s leading Dolly Parton tribute act, has spoken candidly about the emotional challenge of impersonating the legendary country singer following her recent death. Despite feeling it will be “very strange,” Kelly has pledged to continue her shows, carrying forward Dolly Parton’s enduring legacy.
The 52-year-old, who is endorsed by the Parton family and has previously served as Dolly’s body double, described Dolly’s passing as “a great light” going out in the world. Kelly expressed deep gratitude for the influence Dolly had on her own life and career, acknowledging she would not have reached her position without the star’s inspiration.
Kelly’s talents led her to be the sole UK finalist in the official global casting call for the new Dolly Parton Broadway musical. A mother of two from Aldbury, Hertfordshire, she began singing country music as a teenager and discovered her gift for impersonating Dolly at a friend’s 40th birthday party, which sparked her journey as a tribute artist.

In an emotional video posted on her Facebook page, Kelly became tearful as she processed the news of Dolly’s death. She shared that she had believed Dolly would live to be 100 and revealed conversations with Dolly’s family and friends, who were all deeply saddened by the star’s brief battle with cancer.
To prepare for her performances, Kelly underwent six months of intense training, mastering dress-making, makeup, instrument playing, and Dolly’s distinctive speech. Although she admitted continuing the shows would be difficult, Kelly affirmed her commitment, stating simply: “I’m going to go forward with my show.”
Kelly’s home is a testament to her dedication, housing over 150 Dolly costumes, books, photographs, signs, rhinestones, and wigs. Having met Dolly in 2011, Kelly described her as “a genius” and said it will take time to adjust to her absence.
The Rose Theatre highlights Kelly’s international tours with “The Dolly Show,” which celebrates Dolly Parton’s musical legacy from the 1960s onward.
