Doctor’s Secret Ingredient Porridge for Weight Loss

A doctor, known as @the_gp_mum on social media, has shared a unique breakfast recipe that not only offers a healthy start to the day but also includes a 20p ingredient known to aid in weight loss. Dr. Stephanie Jen Chyi Ooi has endorsed a “levelled up porridge” that contains an unexpected yet beneficial item.

The doctor’s recipe starts with the usual preparation of porridge, selecting her preferred brand and cooking it on the hob. Dr. Ooi recommends adding jumbo oats to balance out the texture of Ready Brek, a brand she endorses for its vitamin richness in calcium, iron, and vitamin D.

What sets this porridge apart is the unconventional addition of eggs. Despite its surprise factor, the addition of eggs is said to enhance protein intake and promote weight loss. According to the doctor, the taste of the eggs is undetectable, and it serves as a nutritious enhancement to the meal.

Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse, providing a wide range of essential nutrients, including vitamins D and B12, along with the mineral iodine. Categorised as a ‘complete protein’, eggs encompass all nine essential amino acids necessary for growth, development, and repair.

The protein content in eggs contributes to their satiating nature, helping to suppress the hunger hormone ghrelin and prolong feelings of fullness. This can discourage snacking, potentially leading to reduced calorie intake and weight loss.

Studies suggest that starting your day with eggs could lead to a decrease in overall calorie consumption, with overweight individuals who include eggs in their breakfast tending to lose more body fat and achieve a slimmer waistline compared to those who opt for a carbohydrate-rich breakfast.

While it’s advisable to consume eggs in moderation as part of a balanced diet, research indicates that the cholesterol in eggs has minimal impact on blood cholesterol levels for most people. In fact, the high cholesterol content in egg yolks has been found to have minimal effect on total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood.

The doctor points out that eggs can be an affordable and healthy breakfast choice, particularly when combined with other nutritious elements. Her meal is completed with a topping of milled flaxseeds, known for their association with reduced cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease. She also recommends adding other wholesome toppings such as seeds, fruits, nut butters, or Greek yogurt for additional benefits.

Dr. Stephanie Jen Chyi Ooi suggests that in moderation, eggs can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet and consistent exercise routine. According to specialists at Harvard Health, the average healthy person is likely to experience no harm from consuming up to seven eggs per week.
