Doctor Warns of ‘Chronic Deficit’ Impacting Everyone’s Wellbeing

Dr Rangan Chatterjee, a renowned medical professional and broadcaster, has issued a warning about a widespread issue he refers to as a ‘chronic deficit’ that is affecting people’s mental wellbeing globally. Speaking to his 1.6 million Instagram followers, Dr Chatterjee explained that modern life has eroded our natural sense of control, leading to feelings of helplessness and anxiety.

Dr Chatterjee, known for his appearances on BBC’s Doctor in the House and This Morning, as well as his work as an author and podcast host, highlighted how humans evolved in close-knit tribes focused on immediate survival needs—food, shelter, and safety—within a limited environment. In those times, problems were tangible and often solvable within the tribe.

Today, however, we are inundated with constant news of global crises and events beyond our personal influence. This relentless exposure to uncontrollable problems contributes to a collective sense of disempowerment, leaving many feeling overwhelmed.

Despite this, Dr Chatterjee encourages focusing on what we can control—our internal mindset and reactions. He emphasizes that regaining even a perceived sense of control can significantly reduce dependence on external circumstances and boost emotional resilience.

“Is this feeling of control an illusion? Partly,” he admits. “But does it matter? Not at all.”

Through his work, including his book Happy Mind, Happy Life, Dr Chatterjee offers practical, accessible strategies that anyone can use to cultivate happiness and calmness. He assures that these methods don’t require extensive time, money, or willpower.

His message is clear: while we can’t control the world around us, we can learn to control how we respond—leading to greater contentment and joy in everyday life.
