Doctor Warns: Never Ignore These Four Red Flag Signs After a Flight

As summer travel soars, a leading vascular specialist emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs after flying—signs that can point to serious health risks such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Dr. Mark Regi, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at VeinCentre, explains, “Long-haul flights limit movement, placing extra strain on the circulatory system. People with poor circulation or varicose veins face heightened risks of developing DVT, a dangerous blood clot typically found in the leg.”

While walking around the cabin and wearing compression socks usually help, understanding the symptoms that signify a more serious problem is vital. Influencer Molly-Mae Hague recently shared her frightening experience with severe leg pain post-flight, which led to fears of a blood clot. Though she was cleared by doctors, she urged followers to take these risks seriously, regardless of age.

Key symptoms of DVT include throbbing pain in the calf or thigh, swelling in one leg, visible swollen veins, and discoloration of the skin—red, blue, or darkened patches. Dr. Regi advises anyone experiencing persistent swelling or a heavy, cramping ache after flying to seek medical advice promptly.

“DVT can escalate quickly. If you develop breathlessness or chest pain alongside leg symptoms, seek emergency care immediately—this could indicate a clot traveling to the lungs, known as a pulmonary embolism,” he warns.

Dr. Regi stresses that individuals with varicose veins should be especially cautious. During lengthy flights, impaired vein function can worsen due to prolonged immobility. He recommends wearing medical-grade compression stockings, staying well-hydrated while minimizing alcohol and caffeine, and performing simple exercises like calf raises and ankle pumps to maintain healthy blood flow.

Far from being a cosmetic concern, varicose veins indicate underlying venous insufficiency that, if untreated, can lead to complications. Treatments such as Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) offer minimally invasive solutions by closing malfunctioning veins at their source, alleviating symptoms and improving circulation.

Awareness and timely action can make all the difference—never ignore these red flags after a flight.
