Doctor Reveals How a Common Habit Could Cause Bloating and Digestive Discomfort

Bloating is an uncomfortable sensation that many experience after eating, characterized by a swollen or overly full feeling in the stomach. While certain foods and health conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are well-known culprits, a retired GP highlights an often overlooked cause: the amount of air we swallow, particularly through habitual gum chewing.

Dr. Lawrence Cunningham, a retired GP with the UK Care Guide, explains that chewing gum can lead to excess air intake. “When you chew gum, you tend to swallow more air, which can accumulate in the digestive system and cause bloating,” he says. “This happens even though you’re not swallowing the gum itself.” He also notes that sugar-free gums containing artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol may contribute further to digestive discomfort and bloating in sensitive individuals.

With approximately 28 million people chewing gum in the UK and nearly a billion packs sold annually, this common practice could be a hidden bloating trigger for many.

Beyond gum chewing, Dr. Cunningham emphasizes the role of eating habits in air swallowing. Eating quickly and not chewing food thoroughly can increase the amount of air you swallow, worsening bloating. He advises savoring meals and chewing food slowly to reduce air intake and promote better digestion.

Stress is another major factor that can exacerbate bloating. Additionally, eating large meals before bedtime, poor posture while eating, and inadequate hydration can all contribute to digestive discomfort. Dr. Cunningham also points out that wearing tight clothing can physically constrict the abdomen, leading to further bloating.

To manage bloating effectively, Dr. Cunningham recommends staying hydrated, maintaining regular physical activity, and being mindful of your eating habits and body signals. If bloating continues to be a problem, tracking your diet and lifestyle might help identify specific triggers. Consulting a nutritionist or dietitian can also offer personalized strategies for relief.
