Food historian Annie Gray has unveiled a surprising revelation about the world’s “healthiest” foods. In a recent survey, 34 percent of Britons admitted to indulging in at least one sweet treat daily, sparking a discussion on snacking habits. Annie observed a notable shift towards healthier alternatives like satsumas, apples, and nuts for morning snacks as opposed to traditional cakes.
She cautioned shoppers about health claims on labels, emphasizing that a list of health claims does not automatically make a food healthy. Interestingly, Annie highlighted a common factor among truly nutritious foods: they often come without a list of ingredients or packaging.
Recent YouGov data from 2024 showed a trend towards healthier snacking, with fruits and vegetables leading the pack. This shift in snacking behavior is attributed to the influence of apps like ZOE, which focus on gut microbiome health and blood sugar management.

Annie noted a growing emphasis on the quality of food choices and a trend towards healthier eating habits. Nutrition experts at ZOE reported that about 95 percent of people snack between meals, emphasizing the importance of choosing high-quality snacks like nuts, seeds, and fruit over low-quality options such as cakes and cookies.
Research by nutrition scientists revealed that individuals who consume healthy meals tend to snack on less wholesome options. Almonds topped the list of health-enhancing foods, scoring 97 out of 100 for their nutritional value. Known for their antioxidants, protein, and fiber, almonds contain vital nutrients for heart protection.
