As a former Gloucestershire resident familiar with the Cotswolds, I have ventured far and wide across this iconic region. Yet, there is one quiet town I find myself returning to year after year - Nailsworth. Unlike the busier, renowned destinations, it offers authentic Cotswold charm without the crowds.
The Cotswolds are famous for their honey-hued cottages, gentle rolling countryside, and enchanting villages. Each year, over 35 million visitors flock to popular spots such as Bourton-on-the-Water, famously known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, the picturesque Arlington Row in Bibury, and Castle Combe, often described as England’s prettiest village.
Situated conveniently within Gloucestershire, many of these picturesque towns prove easy to explore by car. However, their immense popularity often results in crowded streets, packed coffee shops, and limited parking - frustrations that can detract from an otherwise relaxing day out.

For this reason, I usually choose to spend my visits in Nailsworth, a delightful town nestled within the Stroud Valleys. There, visitors encounter a thriving community of independent shops, inviting cafés, family-run restaurants, and traditional pubs set amid classic Cotswold stone buildings and sweeping green hills.
Nailsworth is home to an eclectic mix of retailers, offering treasures you never realised you needed. Some of my favourites include Armed & Gorgeous, the Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, Red Hen Trading, and Domestic Science. The welcoming atmosphere encourages amiable chats with shop owners, providing a far more intimate shopping experience than one might find in more tourist-trodden towns.
A personal highlight is The Canteen, a charming café known for its mismatched furniture, sunlit courtyard, and hearty menu featuring brunches, crepes, baked goods, and cakes. Adjacent to this is Domestic Science, a homewares store brimming with colourful and quirky items that invariably tempt a purchase.
Other notable cafés include Cafe Vincent, Willow & Co., and Hobbs House Bakery. On the second Saturday of each month, the Nailsworth Artisan Market livens up Mortimer Gardens, where I recently enjoyed a fresh sourdough loaf, locally roasted coffee beans, and a flat white - all savoured while watching friendly locals pass by.
The town’s culinary offerings extend beyond cafés. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the Mediterranean flavours of The Olive Tree Restaurant & Pizzeria, the seafood specialities at William’s, the sophisticated ambiance at Wilder, and the inviting garden patio of Egypt Mill Hotel & Restaurant.
My favourite dining spot, however, is the family-run Amalfi Restaurant & Pizzeria. Beyond its delicious Italian dishes, what truly sets Amalfi apart is its warm and personable staff who engage guests with light-hearted conversation and thoughtful recommendations. As a charming finale to each meal, diners receive a complimentary shot of limoncello, adding a delightful personal touch.
For those wishing to explore the surrounding countryside, Nailsworth provides access to numerous walking routes along the Cotswold canals and valley trails, with scenic landmarks such as Ruskin Mill and Gig Mill nearby. The 9.5-mile Nailsworth, Chavenage, and Avening Circular route offers panoramic views across wooded valleys and rolling hills.
Moreover, Nailsworth’s location brings it within an hour’s reach of vibrant cities like Bristol and Bath, while Stroud – another gem nestled in the Cotswolds – lies just ten minutes away by car. Stroud features a lively high street, weekend farmers’ markets, independent shops, taprooms, music venues, and inviting countryside walks that complement its bohemian atmosphere.
For a peaceful yet fulfilling Cotswolds experience, why not consider exploring Nailsworth and nearby Stroud? Both towns embody the region’s unique charm without the overwhelming tourist crowds, making them ideal for a relaxed day trip or weekend getaway.
