Gloucester Rugby have announced that Dewi Lake, their new signing this summer, will assume the role of club captain for the 2026/27 season. The 27-year-old hooker arrives at Kingsholm with an impressive leadership record, having captained the Welsh national team on multiple occasions, most recently during their summer Nations Series campaign.
Lake will be aided in his captaincy duties by vice-captains Seb Atkinson, an England centre, and Jac Morgan, a back-row player who represents Wales and the British & Irish Lions. Morgan, like Lake, joined Gloucester from the Ospreys this summer. Meanwhile, lock Arthur Clark will not serve as vice-captain this season as he faces strong competition for a place in the second row.
With 31 caps for Wales, Lake takes over the captaincy following the departure of fellow Welshman Tomos Williams, who spent two years at Kingsholm before moving to Saracens over the summer.
Expressing his honour at the appointment, Lake said: “I’m extremely honoured to be named captain of Gloucester Rugby. Not just because of the storied history here at the Club, but also to lead an extremely talented, motivated and exciting group here at Kingsholm.
“I’m grateful to the coaching group for the opportunity and look forward to leading the group with counsel and advice from the strong leaders already here at the Club.”
Gloucester head coach George Skivington praised Lake’s leadership qualities, stating: “Dewi’s leadership experience is there for everyone to see, and we’re delighted he’ll take on the role of captain this season.
“It was important for us to wait until the whole group had a few weeks in the building together under their belt before making a decision.
“The leadership process included input from the entire playing group, as well as our own assessment of who was best placed to lead this team forward through this season and beyond.”
