Departing Gloucester Star Ruan Ackermann Joins DHL Stormers for 2025/26 Season

Gloucester Rugby’s popular flanker Ruan Ackermann is set to continue his career in the United Rugby Championship after signing with the DHL Stormers for the 2025/26 season. The 29-year-old made over 170 appearances during eight impactful years at Gloucester, becoming a fan favourite at Kingsholm.

Despite discussions with several Premiership clubs, including Bath, Ackermann was unable to reach an agreement to extend his stay in England. As a result, he will now take his talents to Cape Town and join the Stormers, a prominent South African side.

John Dobson, Director of Rugby for the Stormers, expressed enthusiasm over the signing. “Ruan is a proven performer known for his hard work and dedication—qualities that align perfectly with our game model. Our fans can look forward to his full commitment every time he takes the field for us,” Dobson said. He added that Ackermann is expected to quickly become a key player at DHL Stadium.

Ackermann himself is excited about the move: “Rugby support in Cape Town is second to none, and I’m eager to join such an experienced group of players and coaches. This is a thrilling new chapter for my family and me, and I’m committed to contributing fully to what I believe will be a strong and competitive squad next season.”

In related news, former Gloucester number eight Zach Mercer has already arrived in Toulon, where he will play in the Top 14 next season. The English international is anticipated to be fit and ready for the start of the new campaign.
