Declassified documents from the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) have offered a firsthand glimpse into the pivotal role played by the intelligence agency in the announcement of VE Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe. The release of these previously unseen records, occurring 80 years after the historic event, captures the excitement and strategic communications within the GCHQ as they prepared to deliver the news of the imminent end of the war.

Among the notable contents is a letter from Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe, addressed to the Deputy Director Naval Section, indicating the German high command’s “unconditional surrender”. This communication, timestamped at 8:30 am on May 7, 1945, instructed Allied expeditionary forces to halt offensive operations while maintaining defensive precautions.

Significantly, the documents also reveal the strict confidentiality measures in place, with explicit instructions not to relay the information to the press. Further insights into the atmosphere within GCHQ at the time are depicted through the annotated messages, including an intriguing note expressing the excitement of the officer transmitting the news.
