David Edwards Jewellers, a familiar name on Cheltenham’s High Street for four decades, has announced it will close its Cheltenham branch. The store at 61 High Street will officially shut after a short liquidation sale starting Tuesday, July 8, at 10 am. However, the Gloucester branch will remain open under new management.
The reason behind the closure is the retirement of owners David and Chantal Edwards, who have served the Cheltenham community since opening their doors 40 years ago. In a statement, they expressed gratitude to their customers and confirmed the transition: “David Edwards the Jewellers in Cheltenham are closing down. After forty years of trading at No 61, High Street on the Strand in Cheltenham town centre, owners Chantal and David are retiring.”
The Gloucester branch, established 30 years ago and now owned by Charlotte and Carlie, both of whom have managed the Cheltenham and Gloucester stores for the past 15 years, will continue to operate. They vow to maintain the high standards and reputation the business is known for, ensuring many more years of exceptional jewellery expertise and customer service.

The closure has sparked an outpouring of supportive messages on social media. Customers recalled fond memories, with one saying: “Happy retirement. Worked in this shop, happy memories.” Another commented: “Got my wedding ring and eternity ring from this shop. Wishing everyone all the best for the future.” Many have wished the couple a joyful retirement.
While the closure is linked to retirement rather than financial hardship, it follows a recent wave of business closures in Cheltenham’s town centre. June saw the shuttering of three cafes and restaurants on Regent Street - Cake Alchemist, The Find, and Domaine 16. This trend has prompted local business owners, like Pak-Wai Hung of 288 Bar and Wok on High Street, to encourage the community to rally behind and support independent retailers to keep the town centre vibrant.
